Zemke finishes eighth in the Rund um Köln – REMBE® rad-net women claim four Bundesliga victories
The weekend was a great success for the REMBE® rad-net team. Jermaine Zemke sprinted to an impressive eighth place at the Rund um Köln (UCI 1.1) following an outstanding team performance.
The women dominated the first four races of the ‘Müller – Die lila Logistik Rad-Bundesliga’.
At the Rund um Köln race, REMBE® rad-net played a key role in shaping the action. Following several attacks at the start of the race, in which the REMBE® rad-net riders were already involved, a five-man breakaway group led by REMBE® rad-net rider Ole Theiler had broken away from the peloton after around 30 kilometres. The group led the 191-kilometre classic, which was being held for the 108th time, for the next 100 kilometres or so. In the final stages, the Sauerland-based Continental team then joined the front of the peloton and, together with the major World and ProTeams, attempted to catch a new three-man breakaway group. However, that group decided the race amongst themselves. In the bunch sprint, Zemke secured eighth place.
“It went really well for us. We had set ourselves two goals: the breakaway group of the day and a top-15 result,” said Zemke after the race. “Throughout the race, we held our own against the WorldTour riders on the climbs, which wasn’t easy, but we pulled together and I felt good. My teammates then did a superb job in the build-up to the sprint. I knew it was important to be well ahead in the final bend, 800 metres from the finish. So I was well positioned on the home straight and held my position.”
Fabian Peplau, sporting director of Team REMBE® rad-net, also praised his riders: “It was a very confident performance. We achieved our goals, were in contention throughout the race and ended up with a top-ten result. We are very satisfied.”
Meanwhile, the women of Team REMBE® rad-net women have made their mark on all four races of the German Cycling League over the past few days. At the league opener in Waldburg, Aileen Schweikart celebrated a solo victory and took the overall lead. The following day, Lisa Klein won the individual time trial in Bad Schussenried. Franziska Brauße sprinted to victory in Berghülen from a breakaway group, as did Katharina Palm today, Sunday, in Überherrn. In the overall standings, Schweikart leads after the first four races with 622 points, ahead of Palm on 594 points. Her team-mates Selma Lantzsch (4th/506) and Karoline Goldschmidt (5th/492) are also in the top five. Consequently, REMBE® rad-net women also lead the team classification. Furthermore, Schweikart tops the mountains classification.
“We dictated the pace on every day, rode the races actively, broke into the leading group and controlled the peloton. We are very pleased with our Bundesliga opener and are already looking forward to Karbach next week,” said Dirk Schlosser, sporting director of the REMBE® rad-net women team.
