The highlight of the day was Laura Süßemilch’s victory in the points race.
The 29-year-old thus provided a minor surprise. She took a lap early on and secured the title with a two-point lead in the final standings. With 22 points, she came out on top ahead of Fabienne Jährig (20/BRC Zugvogel Berlin) and Lena Charlotte Reißner (17/LKT-Tam). “I’m absolutely delighted with the title. I wasn’t expecting this at all, because I haven’t competed in any mass-start races on the track since my serious crash at the Tour de France four years ago. I just wanted to give it another go here at the German Championships. I never would have thought that winning just one lap would be almost enough to secure the title,” said Süßemilch.
Süßemilch secured another medal in the pairs race. Together with her REMBE® rad-net women team-mate Lisa Klein, she finished third behind Messane Bräutigam/Lea Lin Teutenberg and Fabienne Jährig/Judith Rottmann. Hannah Kunz and Selma Lantzsch finished in sixth place. In the men’s event, Roger Kluge and Benjamin Boos came second behind Moritz Augenstein and Tim Torn Teutenberg, and ahead of Tom Luis Lehmeier and Martin Alexander Salmon. Max-David Briese, who formed a pair with Ben Jochum (Lotto-Kern-Haus-Outlet Montabaur), finished fourth.
Hannah Kunz also secured bronze in the 1,000-metre time trial. With a time of 1:10.135 minutes, she was pipped to the post only by the two time trial specialists Lea Sophie Friedrich (1:05.766/RSC Cottbus) and Clara Schneider (1:08.588/RSV Finsterwalde).
On Saturday, the elite men and women will contest the final endurance event. Both will be competing for the title in the elimination race.
