Heidemann finishes second in the opening stage of the Vuelta a Asturias
In the opening stage of the Vuelta Asturias (UCI 2.1), Miguel Heidemann of Team REMBE® rad-net sprinted to an impressive second place.
This means the 28-year-old is currently in second place overall in the highly competitive stage race in northern Spain.
Immediately after the start of the 140-kilometre stage from Oviedo to Benia de Onís, a 13-man breakaway group formed. Alongside Heidemann was his young team-mate Jermaine Zemke. Originally, a first-category climb of almost seven kilometres was scheduled for around the halfway point of the stage, but due to an accident on the route, the climb was cancelled, making the profile somewhat less demanding. This played into the breakaway riders’ hands. On the final climb, the group split. At the front, five riders, led by Heidemann, battled it out for the win; Zemke was unable to keep up. In the final sprint, only the Frenchman Gabriel Layrac (AVC Aix Provence-Dole) was faster than Heidemann, who crossed the finish line in second place, narrowly beaten. Zemke finished in eleventh place.
“I’m definitely happy with second place. Of course, you always want to win, but we set ourselves the goal of achieving top results in this tour, and second place definitely counts as one of those,” said Heidemann after the stage. “It’s a shame that Jermaine didn’t make it over the mountain. We tried to keep the pace in the group steady, but unfortunately the climb was a bit too steep for him.”
In the general classification, Heidemann is in second place, three seconds behind stage winner Layrac. Zemke, who also picked up bonus seconds along the way, is in sixth place, 40 seconds behind.
Tomorrow’s second stage of the four-day tour covers 141 kilometres from Llanes to Pola de Lena. The first half of the race takes place over relatively flat terrain, after which the riders must tackle four climbs, including one of the first category. Two WorldTour teams, UAE Emirates-XRG and Movistar, are also at the start of the Vuelta Asturias.
