Jasch in the day's breakaway group at the Copenhagen Sprint – Zemke wins the Bundesliga classification in Gippingen

The REMBE® rad-net women’s team made a strong debut on the WorldTour. Maira Jasch, in particular, caught the eye and was part of the day’s breakaway group.

At the “Müller – Die lila Logistik Rad-Bundesliga” in Gippingen, Jermaine Zemke also won the Bundesliga classification.
After just 15 kilometres, a seven-strong breakaway led by Jasch had pulled away from the peloton. For the 21-year-old, it was not only the first WorldTour race of her career, but also her first international race ever. “I went on three attacks, but unfortunately they were reeled in every time. Then on the fourth, first two riders got away, then three, and I thought to myself, ‘this is the breakaway of the day and it’s going to stay away’. So I gave it another go and luckily there was a small climb, which really helped me close the gap to the group,” reported Jasch. For a long time, the gap between the leading group and the peloton hovered around 30 seconds, but then increased to as much as two minutes. “Unfortunately, I crashed at a roundabout, but my speed skating reflexes helped me there and I got back up super quickly and was then able to close the gap again,” Maira Jasch continued. The breakaway riders worked well together, but were nevertheless caught by the now severely depleted peloton 40 kilometres before the finish of the 156-kilometre race. “I’m really happy for the experience and that the team gave me this opportunity,” said Jasch after the race, which she ultimately finished in 84th place.

In the sprint finish, the riders from Team REMBE® rad-net tried to position themselves at the front. Selma Lantzsch ultimately finished 22nd, making her not only the best REMBE® rad-net rider but also the best German. With Laura Süßemilch in 30th place, another rider from the team secured UCI points. “Given how we rode the race and the result, we can definitely be satisfied with our first WorldTour outing,” summed up Fabian Peplau, sporting director at REMBE® rad-net.

Meanwhile, the men were in action at the Rad-Bundesliga as part of the Gippinger Radsporttage in Switzerland. There, around 50 kilometres from the finish, a leading group of twelve riders had formed, including the two REMBE® rad-net riders Jermaine Zemke and Julian Borresch. From this group, Zemke attacked with two other riders, one of whom – Swiss rider Valentin Darbellay (Elite Fondations) – further increased the pace on the final lap. Zemke stayed on his wheel but was beaten in the final sprint, crossing the finish line in second place. As Darbellay is not registered for the Bundesliga, Zemke won the Bundesliga classification.

“We tried to make the race difficult. By upping the pace, the group kept getting smaller until there were only twelve riders left at the front. On the flat, the three of us were then able to break away,” explained Zemke. He added: “I launched the sprint 200 metres from the finish, but then unfortunately made a small mistake. But it might not have been enough even without that. I’m very happy with my performance, especially as I didn’t know exactly where I stood after a short break from racing and a high-altitude training camp. But when you miss out on victory by such a narrow margin, it’s frustrating. I’m pleased, though, that we rode so well as a team today and that Borri was able to make up a few points.” Borresch remains in second place in the overall Bundesliga standings.

Tomorrow, the men have the GP Gippingen on the programme. At the Swiss one-day race, they will face top stars such as Olympic champion Richard Carapaz and former world champion Julian Alaphilippe.
