Heidemann retains mountain jersey on Tour of Germany
Miguel Heidemann from Team REMBE® rad-net continues to wear the mountain jersey in the Tour of Germany.
The 27-year-old defended his lead on the queen stage, which started in Arnsberg in the Sauerland region and then led over 176 kilometres through the Sauerland – including the legendary Hirschberger Wand – to Kassel.
This time, a three-man breakaway group formed at the start of the stage, which included neither Heidemann nor his closest rival, Vinzent Dorn (Bike Aid). The breakaway riders took all the mountain points, meaning that Heidemann was unable to gain any points but still leads Dorn on equal points. With Enzo Leijnse (Picnic-PostNL) and Jonas Rutsch (Intermarché-Wanty), two other riders still have a chance of winning the mountain jersey.
"Today was a tough day, I could feel the last two days in the group in my legs. Our guys rode superbly for me and looked after me, so I got through unscathed," said Heidemann after the stage.
The decision for the mountain jersey will be made on tomorrow's final stage. On the 164-kilometre stage from Halle (Saale) to Magdeburg, the riders face only one categorised climb – and that comes after just 16 kilometres, so the first few kilometres are sure to be fiercely contested. "With four teams, the focus tomorrow will be on kilometre 16. Let's see who has the fastest legs there," said Heidemann.
