Adamietz finishes second overall in Tour du Rwanda - Heidemann wins mountain jersey
The Tour du Rwanda (UCI 2.1) ended extremely successfully for the REMBE® rad-net team.
Johannes Adamietz took a strong second place in the overall standings and Miguel Heidemann won the mountain jersey. The Sauerland-based Continental team can also look back on a stage victory on the fifth day by Jermaine Zemke.
On the final stage of the eight-day tour, the riders from the REMBE® rad-net team gave their all once again to defend Adamietz's second place overall. Throughout the race, they pushed me to the front of the field and controlled the pace. “The team did an incredible job today, but also throughout the whole week. So a big thank you goes to my teammates, it was a great team effort,” said Adamietz at the finish. "I'm super happy about second place. We laid the foundation for this on the fourth stage when Julian Borresch and I were in the breakaway group. It's just a shame that I missed Moritz Kretschy's attack there, otherwise I might have been able to make it a little more exciting at the end," the 27-year-old continued. In the end, he finished 2:08 minutes behind overall winner Kretschy (NSN Development Team) in the general classification.
But the REMEBE | rad-net quintet in Rwanda didn't lose sight of Heidemann's mountain jersey on the 84-kilometer final stage around the capital Kigali. To secure it early on, Zemke also sprinted for points at the first mountain classification to take them away from his competitors – with success. In the end, Heidemann won the special classification by one point ahead of Brazilian Bruno Martins Lemes (Localiza Meoo-Swift). "The priority was clearly Johannes' second place in the overall classification. That's why we set a high pace in the final so that no one else could attack. With Jermaine at the front in the mountain classification, we were able to focus on Johannes throughout the entire stage. It was really cool that we worked so closely together again here," said Heidemann.
“We achieved all our goals,” said team manager Jörg Scherf, who was the sporting director for the Tour of Rwanda. “We came here to win a stage and finish in the top ten. We are totally happy and satisfied with how everything went – with Jermaine's stage win, the mountain jersey for Miguel and Johannes' second place in the overall classification. The guys rode really strongly for Johannes again today.”
