Ole Theiler triumphs in Bundesliga opener - REMBE® rad-net takes three leading jerseys
Ole Theiler from Team REMBE® rad-net won the opening round of the men's "Müller - Die lila Logistik Rad-Bundesliga" as part of the Grand Prix of the Southern Wine Route in Schweigen.
This also makes the 22-year-old the first leader in the overall standings of the most important national racing series. Team REMBE® rad-net also took two more leading jerseys with Jonathan Rottmann and Pepe Albrecht.
After less than 40 kilometres of the 150-kilometre race, a preliminary decision was made when the peloton split into several groups on a narrow passage through the vineyards. The first group consisted of only around 40 riders, six of whom were from REMBE® rad-net. Later, another twelve riders broke away from the group around the REMBE® rad-net riders Ole Theiler, Miguel Heidemann and Bruno Keßler, who ultimately decided the race among themselves.
On the last climb, around 25 kilometres before the finish, Theiler and Cedric Abt were able to break away from the rest of their rivals. Behind them was Heidemann with Joshua Huppertz in pursuit, followed by Keßler with Silas Koech (all Lotto-Kern-Haus-PSD Bank). In the final sprint, Theiler came out just ahead of Abt. Heidemann was unlucky and collided with Huppertz at the last roundabout shortly before the finish. Although he did not crash, all momentum was lost. He eventually finished sixth, one place behind Keßler.
"Our plan to make the race difficult early on worked. We lined up well at the front on the narrow dirt tracks and made the early decision," said Theiler after the race. "I was banking on a long sprint as I wasn't sure how fast Cedric was. I'm super happy, it couldn't have gone better for us at the start."
In addition to the purple leader's jersey, Team REMBE® rad-net was able to secure two more classification jerseys: Jonathan Rottmann rode into the green jersey of the best sprinter, Pepe Albrecht took the white and purple jersey of the best young rider.
Tomorrow, Team REMBE® rad-net will start at the Grand Prix of the municipality of Rheinzabern, a national road race.
